Magazine Launch EIKON #101

The issue 101 marks a new start for EIKON in various matters. Therefore we took the opportunity to present the magazine in a new appearance. For the first time the PORTFOLIO section will contain an insightful interview, starting with the EIKON founder Carl Aigner who met artist Renate Bertlmann for a conversation.

As the curator of IN FOKUS, Sabine Flach analyzed the work of Mathias Kessler regarding the discourse about art in the Age of the Anthropocene.

In the FORUM Thaddaeus Ropac talks about the beginnings of his international gallery business, his recent exhibition with VALIE EXPORT and the position of women artists on the art market, in the past and today.

Additionally, you can find a larger section for publications than before, as well as an overview on new titles. From now on, we present highly handcrafted collector’s editions, starting with one by artist Eva-Maria Raab. For our exhibition calendar we invited the new Viennale director Eva Sangiorgi to mark recommendable events of the next months.

As usual you can find reviews on current shows, e.g. Man Ray at Kunstforum Bank Austria in Vienna and the exhibition Afro-Tech and The Future of Re-Invention at Hartware MedienKunstVerein Dortmund.

Edition EIKON´s latest: Renate Bertlmann

We are delighted to include an artwork by Renate Bertlmann as part of Edition EIKON in cooperation with Galerie Steinek.

“Bertlmann’s highly divers oeuvre includes drawings, stages photographs, latex and plexiglass objects, installations, performances, films and photo-films. […] Renate Bertlmann has dedicated herself to the spirit of rebellion. Almost obsessively, her art refers back to bodies, honing in on their intimate zones, giving them a voice. Emphasizing sexuality, tactility and the repressed, she makes these the stage on which she performs her artistic actions.” (Gabriele Schor in the introduction of the publication: “Renate Bertlmann. Works 1969-2016”, eds. Gabriele Schor and Jessica Morgan, 2016)
