EIKON #101: Renate Bertlmann

Renate Bertlmann will be the artist of the Austrian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale 2019. We congratulate her sincerely!

Since the opening of the Austrian Pavilion in 1934, Renate Bertlmann will be the first female artist presenting in solo. The curator Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein acknowledges not only one of the most outstanding feminist pioneers of performance art, but rather hands over the exhibition space to an artist, whose artistic practice is still uncompromising and up-to-date.

Currently EIKON also has an extensive contribution on Renate Bertlmann: In an interview with founder Carl Aigner in EIKON #101 the artist talks detailed about her career.
Besides, her artwork Zärtliche Berührungen (1976/2018) is recently part of Edition EIKON.

Edition EIKON: Renate Bertlmann

“Bertlmann’s highly divers oeuvre includes drawings, stages photographs, latex and plexiglass objects, installations, performances, films and photo-films. […] Renate Bertlmann has dedicated herself to the spirit of rebellion. Almost obsessively, her art refers back to bodies, honing in on their intimate zones, giving them a voice. Emphasizing sexuality, tactility and the repressed, she makes these the stage on which she performs her artistic actions.” (Gabriele Schor in: Renate Bertlmann. Works 1969-2016, eds. Gabriele Schor and Jessica Morgan, 2016)
