The Soul of Architecture

Einsendeschluss: 01.03.2007

Photography competition on spatiality in modern architecture

The aim of the international photography competition arranged by the Henning Larsen Foundation is to inspire innovation in architectural photography in order to bring stronger focus to bear on the especially spatial and complex qualities of modern architecture.

The last many years have seen the emergence of a rather narrow convention for architectural photography in which the focus is on form and detail, a beautiful contour or an elegant profile solution, but to a far lesser degree on depicting a complex and rich spatial sequence. It is the latter development that the Henning Larsen Foundation wishes to encourage − in the hope that new photos that enter more deeply into the creative process and more expressively reveal the soul of the building will help to develop spatiality in new and positive directions.

The competition seeks to give interested photographers the opportunity to present new visions of space − visions that can challenge and develop architecture and its users.

The Henning Larsen Foundation was established and privately funded by architect Henning Larsen in 2001 and has since then distributed grants each year on the founder’s birthday, 20 August − to date to architects Bjarke Ingels, Dorte Mandrup-Poulsen, Merete Ahnfeldt-Mollerup, Julien De Smedt and Kent Martinussen, the architectural firms Kollision and Force4, film director Nils Vest and most recently, in 2006, visual artist Jytte Rex.

Entries to the photography competition on “the soul of architecture” should be submitted not later than 1 March 2007 to Henning Larsen Architects. The winners will be published on 20 August 2007 – with a first prize of €7,000, a second prize of €3,000 and a third prize of €2,000.

The jury panel consists of architect, professor Henning Larsen, photographer, photo director Per Folkver, architect, professor Erik Werner Petersen, architect Merete Ahnfeldt-Mollerup and architect, photographer Christina Capetillo.
