EIKON starts into the new year 2019 with issue #105, featuring Portfolios by Hannah Perry, Louise Lawler, Hans Op de Beeck, Lisl Ponger and the artist collective 280A. With this selection EIKON presents the latest works of up-and-coming talent Hannah Perry and renowed artist Lisl Ponger and examine – on the occation of recent exhibitions – a cross section of Louise Lawlers and Hans Op de Beecks bodies of work. In cooperation with FOTO WIEN, the artist collective 280A will present their latest project VACANT DREAM STATE also at EIKON Schaufenster.

In the section IN FOCUS Anna-Kaisa Rastenberger relects on the „Ethics of Exhibiting“ and discusses „quality“ and inequality in the contemporary art world. Additionally to her essay, Anna-Kaisa Rastenberger, who curated the whole rubric, invites five international photography curators and editors to talk about the ethical considerations taken into account when planning an exhibition or publication. On the occasion of FOTO WIEN, the new moniker of biennal Month of Photography in Vienna, the Vienna City Councilor for Cultural Affairs and Science, Veronica Kaup-Hasler, and the new director of the festival, Bettina Leidl, sat down to talk with EIKON.

Along with discussions of the solo exhibition of Birgit Jürgenssen at Kunsthalle Tübingen and the themed exhibition „Bauhaus and Photography. On New Visions in Contemporary Art“ at NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, as well as reviews to new publications, you will find current announcements, open calls and recommendations by Lisa Long, new curator at Julia Stoschek Collection.

A project in cooperation with FOTO WIEN

With VACANT DREAM STATE, the artists collective 280A sets approach to the complex challenge of seven artists documenting and reproducing a nine-day long stay on an island. In the interplay of creation and reproduction, the lines between reality and copy get blurred.  The individual artists transform from creators to replicas of themselves—a world made of (self-) images emerges and reveals questions as “Why do we portray our reality and why do we repeat those portrayals?“.
Thus the group meets the ghosts of their own representation and its technological temptations within. The imperfection, accompanying the way to the perfect re-creation, puts this experiment inside a temporal circulation of origination and decay.

A main contribution in the latest issue EIKON #105 is dedicated to the artist collective.

As part of the Düsseldorf Photo Weekend, the Photo Book Salon presents selected independent photo book publishers. From March 8 to 10, 2019 the salon will exhibit numerous books by established and yet undiscovered photographers, as well as exclusive limited editions of artists books. In the section of contemporary photography magazines visitors are able to browse current publications and get in touch with the exhibitors. Book Releases, signing sessions and lectures complement the program.

In addition to the Photo Book Salon, the Düsseldorf photo weekend hosts further exhibitions, talks, lectures and film screenings.
